East Providence Mayor confirms bridge may get demolished.

friends no more?

East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva has confirmed the Rhode Island Department of Transportation has told him there could be complete demolition of the 195 Washington bridge. There are several interesting items from the Saturday night post of the East Providence mayor. First, there is no mention of Governor McKee or that the mayor has had any recent communication with Coach McKee. DaSilva has been a loyal supporter of McKee, helped him win election, and was even mentioned as a possible LT. Governor selection. However, the friendship has cooled since McKee blindsided the mayor by closing the bridge with no warning whatsoever. State House sources claim McKee is tired of hearing about traffic problems in East Providence, (that have no impact on the daily commute of McKee from Cumberland. Second, the mayor calls DOT, not Mckee. Mayor DaSilva does not mention any assurances from McKee that he would be informed of a complete demo. Third, DOT tells DaSilva that no decision has been reached and they are still collecting data. As opposed to what? Telling the mayor on a Saturday night he has again been left out of the loop and the bridge will undergo complete demo? It seems more than obvious they are moving towards complete demolition but are unsure how (or when) to announce it. Mayor DaSilva also mentions “replacing the bridge will be the correct decision.” How does he know that? What is the cost? Timeline? Mayor DaSilva has every right to no longer trust McKee and the people in the East Bay deserve to know the truth of how long their life will be impacted by the bridge fiasco. It speaks volumes of the lack of trust the Mayor of East Providence has in Governor McKee that he goes around him in a desperate Saturday night phone call to DOT, to attempt and find reassurances that he is again not left out of the loop. McKee staff has tried to argue heavy traffic could be seen as a “good thing, as opposed to empty roads and a ghost town.” As if a traffic jam is an indicator of a bustling economy? Like a long line to enter a nightclub?
