Current Commerce Secretary and former Governor Gina Raimondo made a bold statement with her insult to the USA flag in her official state portrait. Raimondo, a progressive and known perfectionist, purposely had the US flag lower than the state flag of Rhode Island for “all the woman who are treated as second class citizens in this country.” Raimondo in her own Michele Obama “first the first time in my life I am not ashamed of my country” moment, went out of her way to encourage more women to get involved in politics. It is hard to believe that this slight of the US flag was not intentional and deliberate. Many progressives have the attitude that the country “founded by old white men” needs to be reshaped by progressive women. In the past whenever a flag is present in a portrait, the state historian is consulted for accuracy. Raimondo purposely had the US flag lower in her official portrait.
