Providence youths beat man into coma

On January 19, 2026, at approximately 7:23 p.m., patrol officers responded to the area of 249 Manton Avenue for a report of an assault. Witnesses reported observing several individuals assault an adult male, knocking him to the ground and repeatedly kicking and punching him before fleeing the area.

Officers located the victim, a 51-year-old male, who was transported to Rhode Island Hospital. In the early morning hours of January 20, detectives were notified that the victim’s condition had significantly deteriorated.

Detectives conducted an extensive investigation, including a video canvas of the area. Youth Services Bureau detectives assisted with the investigation.

Later that day, officers located and took three juveniles into custody in the Manton Avenue area following a separate disturbance. During interviews conducted with guardians present, all three admitted involvement in the earlier assault. A fourth juvenile suspect was subsequently identified and apprehended last night pursuant to a warrant.

All four juveniles (three aged 12, one aged 11) have been charged with felony assault and conspiracy related to the January 19 incident. They also face additional charges stemming from the later disturbance. A Family Court judge ordered all four juveniles held at the Rhode Island Training School.

As of the most recent update from Rhode Island Hospital, the victim’s condition remains unchanged and his injuries are considered life-threatening. The investigation remains ongoing.
